Unable to afford tuition to any of the local schools, he recalls how he would watch through the window of such masters as Bill Ryusaki, Bob Ozman, Bong Soo Han, S.B. Moon and John Leone. Through this eclectic “auditing” of styles, Dux developed his own mixed style that he later codified into what he called Dux Ryu Ninjutsu. In 1975 Dux entered into the Kumite, an event that is considered by some as the predecessor for Mixed Martial Arts. It was said to be a no-holds-barred competition that matched fighters from around the world. Dux entered as a heavyweight and eventually came away with the championship. His experience was written about in Black Belt magazine in 1980 and later became the basis for the 1988 film Bloodsport, in which Jean-Claude Van Damme played Dux. Dux was inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame in 2011, receiving the Platinum Life Achievement Award for his contributions to the martial arts. “We are proud and honored to have Frank Dux as our keynote speaker for our San Antonio awards ceremony,” says Hect. “He is not only a legend in the martial arts but a man I am proud to call a friend.” The Masters Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 and is recognized as one of the premier Martial Arts events on the West Coast. Hollywood, CA (For Release) – The Masters Hall of Fame inducted Kancho John Chang, a 4th Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, at the 2015 Awards Banquet sponsored by Monster Energy on Saturday, June 6. The historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the site of the first Academy Awards ceremony, was the venue for this signature event. Martial arts actor T.J. Storm hosted the evening as Master of Ceremonies, and Martial Arts History Museum President Michael Matsuda presented the keynote address. Kancho Chang first studied Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Chin na and Kung Fu while a Chinese refugee in Malaysia, forced to leave Vietnam, after the Vietnam War. At the age of eight his family immigrated to the United States, where his father forbad his study of the martial arts in the fear that he might injure another child and possibly lead to the family’s deportation. Unable to afford a four-year institution, he attended Foothill Junior College where he found a thriving Shotokan Karate group, eventually working his way up to 4th Degree Black Belt. In 2003 Kancho Chang brought all of his martial arts experiences together to found Chang Tai Do, a martial arts form based on a mixture of Kung Fu, Karate, and the grappling methods of wrestling and Chin na. His Chang Tai Do group now holds classes in the Bay Area cities of Sunnyvale, Saratoga, Los Altos and Menlo Park. “I am very honored to accept this award from the Masters Hall of Fame,” says Kancho Chang. “I would like to thank my family, especially my wife and daughter, for their support, dedication and patience. I would also like to thank Senseis Rick Roberts, Brian Keats and Gene Tibon for their mentoring and friendship. Thank you also to all the parents, students, friends and families that have made Chang Tai Do unique and special. Share: https://www.mastershalloffame.org/index/Blog29/Masters-Hall-of-Fame-CEO-Hanshi-Daniel-Hect-tapped-as-Top-Cop-at-Xavier-University Chicago, IL (For Release) - A CNN opinion article by F. Clark Power, a professor of psychology and education at the University of Notre Dame, on the Russian Olympic doping scandal profiled the work of anti-aging and sports medicine pioneer and martial arts expert Dr. Robert Goldman. The article refers to Dr. Goldman’s study, first published in 1992 and reported on in Sports Illustrated in 1997, of 198 athletes in power and combat sports. In that study, Dr. Goldman, a member of the Masters Hall of Fame, found that more than half of the athletes interviewed said that they would take a performance enhancing drug, even if it would mean their death. More than half of athletes studied (52%) said they would be willing to take a performance enhancing drug that guaranteed success, even if it would result in their death. Dr. Robert Goldman MD, PhD, DO, FAASP is a specialist in anti-aging medicine and sports medicine with degrees from Central America Health Sciences University, School of Medicine in Belize and Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at MidWestern University. He is also the founder or co-founder of several organizations including the National Academy of Sports Medicine in Chicago, the World Anti-Aging Academy of Medicine, and the International Sports Hall of Fame. Dr. Goldman’s work has brought him wide recognition in the worlds of medicine and sports. In addition to his work in medicine, Dr. Goldman, or “Dr. Bob” as he is known in the martial arts world, is a black belt in Karate and a Chinese weapons expert. A four-sport All-College athlete and three-time recipient of the John F. Kennedy Physical Fitness Award, Dr. Goldman also holds more than 20 world strength records and has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. He is a respected member of the Masters Hall of Fame, which is dedicated to recognizing excellence in the martial arts. The study that Dr. Goldman conducted, and which he related in his book Death in the Locker Room II: Drugs and Sports, first asked participants if they would be willing to take a performance enhancing drug if they were guaranteed they would win and would not be caught. Fully 193 of the respondents replied in the affirmative. He then asked if they would still be willing to take the drug if they knew it would result in their death within 5 years. Fifty-two percent of those athletes said they would still be willing to take the drug. A very troubling result. Power relates these results in his CNN opinion article in which he comments on what he considers the “futility” of dealing with doping in sports through threats of punishment alone. The concern, he suggests, is that athletes see the disparity between the amount of money spent on promoting winning in sports compared to promoting the building of character. Dr. Robert Goldman is available for interviews on this topic. For more information about Dr. Goldman, visit his webpage at DrBobGoldman.info. View the CNN article here. Share: https://www.mastershalloffame.org/index/Blog24/Martial-Arts-Leader-Alan-Goldberg-to-Speak-at-Masters-Hall-of-Fame-Ohio Born in Canada and raised in California’s San Fernando Valley, Dux was fascinated with the martial arts. He is the owner of KajuA.R.T.S. (Applied Realistic Tactical System) in Branson, MO. Sifu Huffman began his martial arts training at the age of 6 in American Karate, later training in Aikido and Muay Thai in high school. Under them he has studied Kajukenbo, Daito Rye AikiJujitsu, Wing Chung, Escrima and American Open Style. However, his dedication has been to Kajukenbo. The style of Kajukenbo began in the late 1940s in Hawaii, through the work of martial arts masters Peter Choo, Frank Ordonez, Joe Holck, Chalrence Chang and Adriano Emperado. The form combines element of several styles: Karate and Tang Soo Do Korean Karate, Judo and Jujitsu, Kenpo and Boxing (both Western and Chinese style). Kajukenbo blends these different styles into a mixture of striking, kicking, throwing, takedowns, joint locks and weapon disarmament. A believer in what is known as “Realistic Training,” Sifu Huffman teaches that a martial artist must train the way he expects to perform. “To be a true Martial Artist you must train realistically,” he says. “You can only fight the way you practice. I am greatly inspired by Psalm 144:1, which says, ‘Praise the Lord my rock, who trains my hand for war, and my fingers for battle.’ I am honored to be inducted into the Masters Hall of Fame with so many people I have admired for years.” The Masters Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 and is recognized as one of the premier Martial Arts events on the West Coast. To get around this, Kancho Chang became involved in grappling in junior and senior high school, joining the school wrestling teams. There are no words to express how humbled and honored I have been for all their help.” The Masters Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 and is recognized as one of the premier Martial Arts events on the West Coast. Although he also studied Lama Kenpo Karate with Lua integration, Tai Kwon Do and Tai Chi, he always wanted to learn Wing Chun Kung Fu, inspired by Master Ti Lung and Master Bruce Lee. Finally in 1993 he found a Wing Chung School under Chanh Wah Shun’s lineage and began attending three times each week under his first Wing Chun Sifu, Grandmaster Donald Fling.
The Masters Hall of Fame was founded in 1999 and is recognized as one of the premier Martial Arts events on the West Coast. The association recognizes exceptional Martial Arts Leaders and Legends through induction into the Masters Hall of Fame. Honorees are chosen for their dedication to the martial arts and their work in the community, as well as their individual successes.
